All participants must follow the requirements below:
1. Provide proof of identity and age. Participants must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
2. Successfully complete a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is designed to confirm that participants have the physical ability to successfully participate in the lifeguard training course. The evaluation includes:
• Jump in the water from the side, totally submerge, and recover to the surface
• Swim 150 yards continuously without stopping using a recognizable freestyle or breaststroke. You must demonstrate good body position and breath control. Then immediately start 2-minutes treading water using only the legs, and then immediately push off and swim an additional 50 yards, then you must climb out at the exit point without using a ladder or steps. Swimming on your back or side is not permitted during this skill, but you may wear goggles if you wish.
• Participants will have 1 minute and 40 seconds to swim out 20 yards and swim 7-10 feet deep to retrieve a 10-pound rubber brick at the bottom of the pool, then you must bring the brick back to the surface of the water. Then keeping both hands on the brick and keeping your face above the water swim back to the exit point and get out of the water without using a ladder or steps. Goggles may NOT be used during this skill.

3. To successfully complete the American Red Cross lifeguarding training and receive certification, participants must:
• Pass all the required prerequisites
• Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.
