The Lifeguarding Instructor course trains instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, First Aid, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens. Lifeguarding Instructors with a current Red Cross basic-level certification in Administering Emergency Oxygen may also teach Administering Emergency Oxygen. This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions and evaluate the progress of candidates in a professional-level course.
Prerequisites for Instructor Candidates:
1. Be at least 17 years old on or before the last day of the instructor course.
2. Possess a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, or for Lifeguards.
3. Successfully complete the Online Session for the Lifeguarding Instructor course. Once registered we will email a link that will allow you to complete the Online Session. This will cost an additional $35.00 that you pay directly to the American Red Cross. This $35 Online Session fee is non-refundable.
4. Swim 300 yards while demonstrating continuous breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
5. Tread water using only the legs for 2minutes. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.
6. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards on the surface. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object. The face is kept near the surface so that breathing is possible. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Complete this timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
7. Demonstrate all in-water rescues, first aid skills, and CPR/AED for the professional Rescuer skills.
9. Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
